The rally cry of organizers in the 1960s echoes today in the work of committed community design practitioners across the country, fueled by growing disparity and critical quality of life issues impacting increasingly marginalized communities. In June, design practitioners, community partners, and other committed change makers will gather and reflect on the state of community design to become better future contributors in our communities.

This year’s event will facilitate conversation about strategies to dismantle systemic conditions that give rise to inequality. Through critical analysis, reflection, and dialogue, we’ll deepen our understanding of and influence on the intersection of community design, racial equity, and environmental justice. In addition to pushing forward the conversation on equitable community design, the ACD Conference continues NDC’s role as leaders in the work of making great and inclusive places. This annual event brings together practitioners invested in community engaged design; architecture, design and planning firms, community members, faculty and students, nonprofit organizations, and local governments.

The values that this convening will embody:

  • Design for inclusion and equity
  • Foster connections across disciplines
  • Challenge the status quo
  • Talk about failure
  • Reflect back and forge ahead
  • Center communities in the design process

We are excited to welcome the eminent Dr. Sharon E. Sutton as our Opening Keynote Speaker and Ted Fellow and Next City Vanguard Antionette Carroll as our Closing Keynote Speaker!
