PetSmart and ASU encourage students to design green
[Jan-20-2010]
PetSmart and Arizona State University recently teamed up to sponsor a Dog Dwelling Design Challenge. Students from ASU’s Herberger Institute for Design and Art wholeheartedly took on this unique challenge to design eco-friendly dog houses. The challenge supported the importance of green building and environmental responsibility and provided participating architecture students with hands-on experience.
Designs ranged from modern “dog pods” to greenhouses with live plants. Students embraced the challenge of using earth-friendly materials and unusual design concepts.
PetSmart displayed the top 20 designs at their headquarters in Phoenix, Arizona and allowed associates to vote on their favorites. A panel comprised of PetSmart executives and ASU design staff helped bring the top 10 down to just three winners. Each winner received funds to create scale prototypes of their models. The models were then featured at Greenbuild 2009 in early November.
“We believe we can reduce environmental dependencies and increase business value through sustainable practices. Our corporate office, stores and distribution centers are becoming more environmentally friendly and efficient through gradual changes,” Suzanne Lindsay, PetSmart Director of Sustainability said.
In stores, the nation’s largest pet specialty retailer is implementing green cleaning programs, more efficient energy systems and equipment and processes that help reduce water and energy use. Stores also carry more eco-friendly products and natural pet foods and treats including reusable tote bags. Many stores even participate in a plastic bag recycling program.
At the corporate office, associates participate in a campus-wide recycling program and an office supply recycling program. The company is also in the process of replacing all café containers and utensils with sustainable products to reduce waste.
PetSmart’s participation in the Dog Dwelling Design Challenge and its internal sustainability efforts support their Think Twice green initiative that encourages, enables and empowers all associates to consider the environment in everything they do.
